"On sunday afternoon 31st of October 1971, I will shake hands with and thank any person contributing 40 Marks to the defense fund of Angela Davis, whose trial begins the 1st of November in Los Angeles. No work will be sold, no signature given, no photo, no record, and yet I attach a value to my presence and my act: 40 DM per person net, talked to and shaked hands with. I will call this value AVAILABILITY VALUE, to distinguish it from the old concepts of use value, or labor value, or supply & demand value. Just an availability on my part, just a memory to keep and to share freely on the part of my visitors. MEMORY VALUE may be another name for it. In this particular case, the memory will be that of an act of solidarity towards a person - Angela Davis - whose rights and very life are in jeopardy. But the concept could be extended to the tangible creation and distribution of artworks".
